The above board dates back to May 1843 and is one of the many quirky signs which fill out churches around the UK. It describes two pieces of land which are let to Mr Makin, a church warden, for the sum of £3 and £2 a year respectively, the profits are which are to be given as coal to the poor at Christmas by the Churchwardens.
In 2012 £12 worth of coal is very little but back in 1843 it would have been quite a quantity and very much appreciated by the local poor. The donor remains anonymous and I am not sure how long this donation lasted. Probably not as long as the sign.
Kettlebaston is a lovely little church which I came across on my way home after a day exploring local churches. It was open which is always a bonus.
