Officially this isnt a gargoyle, as to be such it would need to have a water pipe coming from its mouth. So this is probably better described as a decorative carving. Unlike many of the carvings of Selby Abbey it isnt that old and is a replacement for older damaged stonework.
I was rather pleased with this, which is probably due more to the abilities of the Nikon D800 than my technical skills. This creature was actually high on the north side of the Abbey and required a 200mm lens with a 1.7 teleconverter and than some cropping to fill this frame. Despite all of this the detail is wonderful with the surface markings from the stonemasons tools clearly visible.
