A Host of Heavenly Angels

St Mary and All Saints, Willingham, Cambridgeshire

St Mary & All Saints, Willingham, Cambridgeshire

This wonderful hammer beam roof didn't actually start out it life in Willingham it was moved here in 1612 from Barnwell Priory which was demolished at that time. As you can probably image a solid timber roof of this quality is very heavy and this caused the walls of the church below to bow outwards over the next couple of hundred years to the point where tie rods had to be inserted at the end of the 19th Century which can be seen crossing this image. Its a great pity that this had to happen but at least the church is still standing.

The angels are a later addition to the woodwork having been added in the 19th and 20th century. Its not easy to see from this image but they are all different and carved with fine detail.

It was quite a challenge to photograph these due to their height and the darkness in the church. This is a High Dynamic Range created from three individual photos which have been combined on the computer using a program called Photomatix. St Mary & All Saints, Willingham, Cambridgeshire Willingham church is open daily for visiting.
