The Bone Crypt

Holy Trinity, Rothwell, Northamptonshire

Ancient skulls, some dating back to the 13th century sit on old wooden shelves around the wall of the bone crypt which sits beneath the South Aisle of this church in the village of Rothwell in Nortamptonshire. For many years it was closed until it was rediscovered by a workman who fell into it whilst digging in adjacent to the outer wall.  After the fall the sight of all the skulls and bones all around him left him scared for life.

Previous cataloging attempts are evident from numbers written on each skull.

This skull has a hole over the frontal area caused either by trauma or possibly trephinning

The Bone Crypt is open to visitors on sunday afternoons from Easter to September from 2.30 - 4.30 and is definitely worth a visit.
