During a recent weeks holiday in Suffolk I took time out to visit St Marys Church in Woolpit where on a small stone ledge on the south wall of the south isle I found this old piece of carved stone. It features a Woodwose or ancient wild man. These can be found throughout Suffolk mainly on fonts where they often sit under the main body of the font. They remind me of ancient cave men with clubs in their hands and animal skin clothing.
St Marys church has an amazing angel adourned wooden roof, an lovely rood screen and is open each day.
