Ancient skulls, some dating back to the 13th century sit on old wooden shelves around the wall of the bone crypt. Previous cataloging attempts evident from the numbers written on each skull. The Bone Crypt is open to visitors on sunday afternoons from Easter to September from 2.30 - 4.30 and is definitely worth a visit.

Close up of the lower section of this ancient font showing a mythical Woodwose, an ancient figure who appears in art and literature throughout Europe.
In time gone past the stonework in churches would have been lavishly painted in bright coloured, traces of this can still be seen on this font and figure.

Beautiful wooden font cover dating from 1673 in the small village church in Churchover near to Lutterworth in South Leicesterhire.

My visit to this church was quite late in the day on the way back from Coventry Cathedral so therior was rather dark. For old wood like this I find that flash destroys too many shadows so the only othption was to bump up the ISO to 3200 which I did thn used Noiseware to reduce any noise during processing.

One of the many engraved glass windows in the "Screen Of Saints and Angels" in the New Coventry Cathedral. This image was taken from the nave looking out to catch the light.

The screen was designed and engraved by John Hutton. There are 66 figures in total in the screen which was completed in 1962 and took Hutton over ten years to create.

Hutton, known for his glass etchings, was born in 1906 in New Zealand and died in 1978 in England.

Ancient Font, All Saint's, Lullington, Wiltshire.

This amazing Norman Tub shaped stone font in the church in Lullington Somerset, dates back to the 11th century and is one of the finest in Somerset. The inscription reads "Hoc Fontis Sacro Peveunt Delicta Lavacro". Which tranlated means "in this holy font sins perish and are washed away"

This stained glass panel is part of the East Window of Trent church which contained a large quantity of ancient continental glass. Some are small fragments which take time to discover, this one was larger and easier to see.
Note the date of 1629.

I happened across this church whilst travelling back from a day in Bath, I wasnt sure what to expect as I made my way from the car in the rain. Firstly joy at the fact that the church was open, the result of a recent installation of a security CCTV system and then this amazing window, which must now rank in my top 10 greats of all time. With the aid of a telescopic lens I was able to pick out much of the fine detail.

Detail from the Tanfield Tomb, in memory of Lawrence Tanfield who died in 1625. Lawrence and his wife lie on the tomb with a Gisant below and at the foot his grandson Lucius Cary, 2nd Lord Falkland, flanked by a demi-figure of Lady Tanfield. The monument is huge and completely fills the chapel leaving only just enough room to walk around the perimeter. The work is not documented but is attributed to Southwark sculptor Gerard Christmas.

Tucked away in the corner of this church behind the organ it was great to find this memorial adourned by cherubs. A challenge to photograph with little room in front of it and very limited light i was pleased with this final image.

Porthlunney Cove is a popular Cornish beach which on a warm day will attract hudreds of visitors. With its cliffs, waves, sandy sheltered beach, rock pools and large accessible car park it has everything. Less than a mile the area has another attraction that few will have been aware of and even fewer will have visited.
Overlooking Caerhays castle and its estate St Michael's is entered through a traditional Cornish Lynchgate complete with a raised coffin rest.
Inside are memorials, stained glass windows and a great old organ.
On the day of my visit (mid August) the sun was streaming through the windows making lighting conditions far from ideal, thankfully HDR saved the day. This triplet processed using photomatix gives in my opinion an anaesthetically pleasing result.
On each of my visits the church has been open.
Next time your down that way why not pop in, its never usually very busy unlike the cove, but if you remember to leave a little somthing in the donation pot to help maintain this beautiful building.

I was expecting to see a great tomb in St Denys but wasnt aware of this pulpit beofre the visit so was plesently suprised. Made of oak with an eagle lecturn it sits on a stone base. There are four floral motifs one on each face of the pulpit which had great detail.
This image was taken with a 14mm Nikon Prime lens so parts of the image are a little distorted but I think it works well.

Alabaster Tomb of Edmund Brudenell who died in 1590. The front panel has reliefs of his three children and wife (now headless).
After a few visits to St Denys over the past few years I finally managed to take some photographs inside today. I hadnt really planned to visit so hadnt prepared but there wasnt really any need as there was so much to see. I'd seen many images of this tomb on Flickr and was looking forward to seeing it, closer inspection revealed a pile of breeze blocks supporting the heavy top presumably after a previous collpase, luckily this wasnt at all evident from most angles.

I was married in this church 12 years ago so it was nice to return and take some photos of the amazing tombs there. At the time of my marriage the original banners had been removed but hadnt been replaced. Now replicas of the originals hang from the ceiling and look great.

The Kelway monument to John Harington, eldest son of James and Alice, his wife Anne and her father Robert Kelway. John was created Baron Harington of Exton by James I in 1603 and for a time looked after the King's eldest daughter Elizabeth, who was to become the Queen of Bohemia.
